Chapter 7

CONNOR BENT down and tightened the last bolt on the lift. All that was left was for him to try it out. It had been more complicated and exacting than the other one he’d installed, but it was in, and he’d tested it out with his weight. Now he just needed to make sure everything worked with Jerry’s chair. Over the past week, he’d been at the house quite a bit to complete the installation and prepare for the removal of the existing built-in cabinet. Every time he saw Dan, he’d wanted to ask him about that night. Connor couldn’t remember a thing about what happened after they ended up in bed together, and Dan hadn’t said anything about it. At one point during the night when Connor woke up, Dan was holding him tightly. He wasn’t sure whether Dan had meant for them to fall asleep together. They’d been naked, but Connor couldn’t remember if they’d had sex or not. His mind was a complete blank. He’d thought to ask Dan a number of times, but he hadn’t, and Dan had never brought it up. Come to think of it, Dan seemed to have been making himself scarce. Connor finished the last adjustments and tried out the lift one more time before deciding it was time to stop acting like a scared little kid and find Dan.

He was in his office. Connor knocked on the doorframe and stepped inside. “The lift is ready,” he said. “I was wondering if Jerry could try it out.”

“Of course,” Dan said and stood up. Connor figured it was now or never. “Did I do something wrong?”

Dan paused. “No, I was going to ask you the same thing. You’ve been avoiding me all week, and after our date when we ended up in bed together, I thought maybe you thought things had moved too fast or maybe I’d….” Connor could always tell when Dan was nervous, at least with him, because he tended to run on at the mouth.

“Did anything happen? I don’t remember. I’m not used to drinking, and I think we had more than we should have.”

“I don’t remember anything other than me falling on the bed and holding you. I don’t drink much either, and, boy, I was nervous, so I think I overindulged and….” Dan smiled and then began to laugh. “We really need to learn to talk about stuff.”

“I thought you were ashamed of what happened,” Connor said. That had hurt a lot, and he’d spent many late hours working well into the night.

“I thought I might have gone too far. You didn’t say anything about it, and I was….” Dan shook his head slowly. “If all I did was hold you all night, then it was one of the best nights of my life, and I’m sorry I don’t remember it.”

“I thought you—” Connor began. All kinds of things had run though his mind. That they’d been intimate, and it had been such a disappointment that Dan was staying away.
